This one-page summary chart covers AS 29 on Provisions, Contingent Liabilities and Contingent Assets as taught for CA Inter Advanced Accounting. It sets out the three recognition conditions for a provision, how provisions are measured and reviewed, and how contingent liabilities and contingent assets are disclosed or left out of the financial statements. It suits students who want a quick, structured revision of AS 29 before their exam or while solving practical questions.

What the chart covers

The chart explains what a provision is, with the three conditions that must be met before recognition: a present obligation arising from a past event, a probable outflow of resources, and a reliable estimate of the amount. It then separates possible obligations and present obligations where one of the conditions is not met, and shows how a contingent liability is disclosed unless the chance of outflow is remote. Contingent assets, onerous contracts, restructuring provisions and decommissioning costs are also covered, along with the presentation of reimbursements.

How to use it for exam revision

Use the chart to test yourself on the three recognition conditions and the probability thresholds, which are the points most often asked in theory and case-based questions. Work through the restructuring cases, where only directly associated costs are included, and the rule on new laws requiring rectification of past damage. Read the review of provisions section before answering questions on changes in estimates, as it links directly to disclosure decisions.

Who should read these notes

These notes are meant for CA Inter students studying Advanced Accounting who are revising AS 29 and need a compact summary alongside the standard text. They are also useful for students preparing for practical questions on provisions in financial statements, where the choice between recognising a provision, disclosing a contingent liability or doing nothing has to be justified.

Frequently asked questions

What are the three conditions for recognising a provision under AS 29?

A provision is recognised when there is a present obligation from a past event, a probable outflow of resources, and a reliable estimate of the amount. If any one is not met, the item is treated as a contingent liability or is not recognised.

When is a contingent liability disclosed but not recognised?

A contingent liability is disclosed in the notes to accounts when the outflow of resources is possible, meaning the chance is less than 50 percent. If the chance is remote, no disclosure is needed.

Can a contingent asset be recognised in the financial statements?

The chart states that a contingent asset is neither recognised nor disclosed in the financial statements, unless the reimbursement or inflow is virtually certain, in which case it is recognised as a separate asset.
