A commensurable ratio means a ratio between two quantities that can both be measured by the same unit (i.e., they have a common measure). If two lengths have a common unit that divides both exactly, their ratio is commensurable. If not, then the ratio is called incommensurable. Example: The ratio of 6 cm to 9 cm is commensurable, because both can be measured using 3 cm. The ratio of the side of a square to its diagonal (1 : √2) is incommensurable, because no common unit exactly measures both.
